Common Issues With Ek3

macroxx

Recommended Posts

Hi guys,

I thought to open a thread to discuss about common issues with ek3's and eg's because we always panic and post threads only when something happens :action-smiley-060: . But how about knowing the common issues with the vehicle and watch out. Also this might help you to identify the issue at the first sight.

I'll start with one of my experience :) .

my ek3 had an engine knock 3 months back and got the distributor oil seal replaced, cost about Rs.750 for that  (there is another post here about that). And after posting the issue and solution I've got several respond saying that it is a common issue in d15 engines.

Ok that's my story, let's share your's with others B)

Cheers brothers

i drove 2 vtec eks for 3 years and this is what i experienced.

eks are very famous for uneven ware out of tyres no matter how many times you get your alignments checked.

D15 B engines are famous for idling issues and need frequent cleaning of idle control valve.

all the door stoppers (detent rods) tend to make noses and becomes rough when time passes.

both ek and eg is famous insufficient air condition due to the small condensers they use.

a lot of ek's have issues with front windshield beeding since it tends to go out of shape and need replacing.

rear suspension tends to give you enough troubles if the trailing arm bushes and other links are not genuine or not in good condition.

oil leakages from tappet cover packing is something you would experience after the engine runs about 120k kilometers.

Theres absolutely nothing wrong with the CVT GEARBOX. its just that people didnt know how to maintain them.

be ready to replace the power antenna after some time (if you have got a one in your car!)

thats all i could retrieve at this odd time of the day :D

Have experianced the Door stopper noise (*Tuk noise) in ED,EF,EG and EK

The windshield issue is common for all civics i guess.I've seen it in ED,EF,EGs,EKs and even in an ES8 :D

Not one, quite a few I've seen mentioning that around the forum. IIRC shanX/MkX had done that and said cooling was superb. Will try to find the thread

Nope, I dint replace the condenser, I just did a full service of the A/C system :)

I replaced the Distributor oil seal, and now I'm having issues with the performance and detonation noise comes if you press the accelerator bit fast. I brought the my ek3 to several places but the problem still there even to agents too. They also tried and adjusting the distributor but still I don't have the previous performance of the vehicle and the noise also still there.

here is the original thread I discussed the issue.

This can be corrected easily, It cost me only Rs 200 or 300 for all four doors. What they did was re-sharpening the worn nylon bushes.

but issue arises again in no time. the lasting solution is to replace the door stoppers. only agent has it. or else in junk shops. but even in junk shops, you will find everything but the door stopper for the ek3 :D telling with my own experience.

fitting dual core condensers are very common for EK's. it works perfectly alright. the slightest issue is you could see that the bigger condenser is squeezed in when you open the bonnet. Danno Danithi :D

Correct machan, it will only reduce the noise. It will come up later on. I did reshape it and it only reduce the noise, but its ok with me for the moment. Any ideas about fixing the suspension issue you told? I did complete suspension job for the front and replaced all the rear bushing, but sometimes when I travel over a bumpy road "kiri" "kiri" sound :D coming from the rear. I must mention that I still did not replaced the rear shocks. Any place to buy a shock couple for cheep price?

that kiri kiri noice wont go off even if you replace the suspension. ideally it should be coming from rear right hand side. correct??

i was trying to figure out the source of that sound for nearly an year but i failed. :action-smiley-060:

cheap shocks mean the used ones. places may vary on where you stay. colombo? Kandy??

I had the same ignition noise, so last week I took my car to the garage and retard it. Then the pick up power red used noticeably (Specially with the AC on) And I immediately took it back to them and advanced it a bit more. Now everything is cool, no ignition noise and the pick up is good. IMHO Give a complete engine tune up and then do the ignition timing adjustment. I don't know too much information about this, any better ideas guys?

PS. I heared Zaki is doing complete engine tune-ups including Tappet adjustments, pressure checking, injector cleaning, AF ratio checking, etc. for rs6,500 I guess. What do you guys think about that? Does that worth? and is he good? I only heard about him

Aiooo machan is that so... then no use me wasting another year to figure it out :action-smiley-060: "Mama hitha hada gaththa :D ". any ways am in colombo. How long will it last? (Used ones) And any idea about the price for used ones and new?

it would be a difficult thing to predict the life time of a used shock since we never know the condition and mileage of the car which the shocks were taken out. could be anything between 6 months to 2 years. a wild guess.

new ones would cost you somewhere around 8-10 k and used ones may cost you half the price.

The kiri kiri sound that comes from the back- maybe from the interior plastic panels moving on their mounts- happens due to age and because the panels are lightweight stuff- compared to say toyota. Not sure how it can be fixed. Also if the sound only comes from the right- there is a possibility that its related to the exhaust or pipes- since they run on the same side; the exhaust rubber bushes tend to get wasted, if there is lot of vibration coming along the pipes- which is usually the case if you are running a straight through setup

Machan, the thing with used shocks is that you are taking spare parts from a car that's more than a decade old and you have no idea what the mileage is, nor do you have any idea whether the donor car was in an accident that could have caused damage to the part. Considering the work needed to replace it, you are better off putting in new ones.

Thanks machan, Yeah I think going for new parts is a good idea. Any ways I've asked another question in an earlier reply, If you haven't seen it. Can anybody give me a kind respond for this too?
