Free Gps Navigator For Android (Mapfactor Navigator)

Recommended Posts

I found this free app when I am searching for a free GPS navigator.

Pros : Free, accurate

Cons : some streets are not included.

(Since this is a free one, some streets and areas are not included. For example when you search " pinnawala elephant orphanage" you couldn't find any results)

Here are some screenshots and guide to how to use this app.

Installation - you can download from https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.mapfactor.navigator&hl=en

After installing you have to select the country and download the map.

  • Then there are some files you need to download

  • Now you are ready to go

  • Go to search and enter the country name to search

Then city

Then select the streets or area you want to go

After that there are several options you can select.

You can point the last searched location as a way point , starting point destination or what available in the menu or directly go to navigate.

I have been using this and its good offline navigator. Also you can use Google (Derived from Google Maps API I assume) as an option to give your destination but then you need to activate mobile data just to get the correct destination. Thereafter its offline. You can minimized the app as it can run background while travelling and voice navigation will work and let you know the directions before 1 km, 200m, 100m and on the spot of each turn.

I think (not sure) that Googles turn by turn navigation doesn't work in SL. It will map a path show all the turns etc, but it doesn't track you and give the voice directions, AFAIK. Yet.

Of course, if there is a way to get that sorted, I'd love to know it, coz I wanna use it too!

As per my knowledge Google voice navigation does not work in SL and what this map does is that it gets the destination from the Google and then the map itself create the route. Install and try it as it is free. You may find it interesting. But you won't be able to get real time traffic on this map.

I have used it like that. Too much manual intervention required while driving :)

Fully Googlefied, Nexus phone and tab, now all running KitKat ;)

I would like to know whether voice navigation is available in Google Maps in relation to Sri Lanka?

What do you mean by that? Kindly explain pls. because what I face is that, It says the way to destination either shortest, cheapest ( Don't know how the app think as it is the way cheapest but) or fastest way but most of the times, we have to take our own route from experience because of the reason that the suggestion road condition is too bad or is a heavy traffic way. Also the map does not have almost all the roads in Sri Lanka especially outside Colombo.

I think these 3 options doesn't apply that much when navigating in SL.

Shortest normally means route with the shortest distance.

Fastest option keeps you in a highway for as long as possible, theory been you can travel at a much greater speed when on a highway

Cheapest option keeps you off of toll roads and bridges

Members,

I have Google as well as local dealer’s map, both works same.Correct Google maps as other members inform, do not give correct information.

L/Ds map give you accurate, directional voice in three languages. You can get same updated in few minutes if you go to his work shop.

They have vehicle tracking it is Rs: 40000/=. Records of all vehicle travel will be there for three months. It is good for vehicle hiring companies.

I was told this is available with a cellular operator. Taxi cabs meters do have that faility with a post paid Simcard.

Cant we edit these maps our selfs? Like add a new road, a place etc.?

Yes you can, if you are a member of Google Map Maker community. But changes have to be submitted, approved, etc. So your changes won't be immediately visible on the main Google Maps.

Also, I don't use expensive third party solutions, but Google Maps has never let me down yet. Only problem is, it can't find street numbers, but roads, and places of business and interest, never had a problem. Not to mention you can cover any gaps yourself. I've corrected a few errors myself.

Well guess we will have to wait for google voice navigation, Their maps are great. Still without the voice navigation intrinsic problems crop up, specially when you arrive at a junction as to which direction you must turn. Most of the time it is straightforward, but sometimes one will have to adopt a trial and error system. Furthermore driving only on navigation simply based on pure viewing is a definite distraction on Sri Lankan roads.

Unfortunately, this be true.

Hi Peri,

There was an app called "maps ownhere" (needs root permission for installation). Basically what it does is, it enables the navigation option from the google app (which is disabled for our country) via its own .apk file. I used to have it in my old phone and it worked like a charm with voice navigation. Those days the goole apps used to be seperate (maps, navigation, etc). but since now maps and navigation is a single app, not sure whether it will work.

you can check in xda developers forum if you are in to this subject. or just google "maps ownhere mod"

Regards,

Worked fine offline on my Nexus 10.

From Hokandara to Darley Road voice assist was accurate.

Purposely took couple of de tours, app was able to rework the route without much hassle (all these happened offline)

Can’t complain much for a free app

  • 2 weeks later...
  • 11 months later...

And now there is Google Maps Voice Guided Navigation. And we can save maps so we could use them without data afterwards. and the "My Maps" feature is great that we could save locations on the computer with grouping. and routing is very easy now with 3D maps.

I have used Garmin Maps symbian version and I would say that was one one the best maps softwares I have came up with.

The "Navigator" for android is also good. But with less details and POIs. In my phone I have difficulties with the software, sometimes it tends to lag and hang.
