Montero Sports Brake Pad Issue

Recommended Posts

Hi, there are two montero sports at my office with ODO at 45000km and 12000km.

during the usage period of 45000km we happened to replace the brake pads 5 times and the vehicle with 12000km had front brake pads replaced once at 10000km.

When I spoke to Uni**d Motors they say its normal as a brake pad is only expected to last from 10000km to 15000km distance.

Meanwhile we have a montero 2013 and several prius cars, non of those giving trouble like this, one prius got a brakepad replacement only after 100,000km.

What might be the reason for such wear-off.

(1) Are both MonteroSports, A/T?

(2) Do you mean that, at the moment 6th brake pad set on your MonteroSport (within 45,000km)?

(3) Have you observed any part number difference in the replaced brake pads than original ones? (As I had such situation in my Viva Elite replacing brake pads at Unit#d Mot#rs. There were 2 qualities and part numbers and prices were also different)

(4) Driving pattern also affects for the lifetime of brake pads.

1. All the vehicles I mentioned here are AT

2. Yes the vehicle is now on its 6th brake pad sets.

3. I didn't go into such details, all the replacements were done at Unimo at a cost of 18,000 per pair.

4. Initially I blamed the driver of the 1st vehicle but later the 2nd vehicle also came up for brake pad replacement in 10,000km, so now i assume nothing wrong with the driving style

Regarding the Prius, the hybrids with their regenerative brake system doesn't wear off the brake pads as fast as their non-hybrid counterparts.

10000 km feels like too low for a break pads replacement.

How confident are you about the indicated odometer readings?

What about the quality of the pads used for subsequent replacements in 45000km one?

I once spoke to their maintenance manager and the person in charge of warranty claims, both sounded like that is normal and i'm making a fuss out of nothing. All the spares used are genuine Mitsubishi spares.

Vehilces are new and I don't think anything to be wrong with odo meter readings.

Never compare brake pad changing intervals of a prius and a montero. Prius has regenrative brakes which reduces the strain on brake pads.

Montero sport is fairly a heavy vehicle and has quite lot of torque and power. If someone's thrashing out it and unleashing that power, simillar effort is required to bring it to a complete stop.

I don't deny a possibility of these vehicles getting (may be a driver is involved) inferior quality parts. May be agents fix the originals and someone changes back to inferior quality ones and sell the good ones off. you never know. But as an owner of vehicles i'm happy with a set of good quality brake pads, even if it wears faster compare to substandard brake pads which don't wear but make the disk to wear off faster.

i think you are correct... cz my uncle owns one and they do quite alot of travelling, he's done 64k km's in one year of use. and still hasnt changed his.. you got to pay some seriouse attention to this.

I understand the fact that comparing prius with montero sport is not correct, but the other Montero I mentioned has done about 25,000km, but not faced any brake pad issues so far.

Suspecting the driver was an option to me before purchasing the 2nd vehicle, which is driven by one of our senior manager, I don't think he would go to such extend to replace the original with inferior quality brake pads and sell the good one.

Why I asked this question is Unit#d Mot#rs imported 2 types brake pads for Viva Elites (Both are Genuine), but part numbers/ prices/ quality is different.

I suspected similar situation. But may be another reason.

Check if the brake discs have warped, cos that can wear down pads quickly. Also depends on where the vehicle is driven also. City traffic would usually take its toll on pads too. The other issue is unnecessary acceloration and braking. Sure fire way to wear through a set!

Also automatics wear through pads faster as you can't use engine breaking as effectively. The Montero is a massive lump of metal so stopping it probably requires considerable force.

Also the pads used might be a softer compound. Is there a lot of brake dust?

Is it possible for us to make a official complaint claiming such wear off is due to production defect/use of inferior quality components.

Yes you can, but you can only complain to the agents as they are the manufacturers official representative.

If you want to complain to MMC Japan you will need to collect some proof that the Unimo is not using genuine products. One way to confirm this is to obtain genuine brake pads from another source, get it installed privately and compare the results.

Remember you can't compare the results from a manual to an auto. Autos go through their pads a lot lot faster.

Yes, you can make a complaint to Unit#d Mot#rs. But not guarantee their reply. :)

However, if you are not happy with the local agents, you can contact vehicle manufacturer directly.

I have done it twice.

Once I contacted Volvo-Sweeden (Ref. our Volvo S40) and they directly communicated with us.

Same way I directly contacted Perodua-Malaysia as I was unhappy with the answer of Unit#d Mot#rs. So Perodua-Malaysia instructed Unit#d Mot#rs to check this matter with me.

However the brake pad set (18R02) I got, had a manufacturing fault and started giving bad notice and making deep lines on rotor disk (even after rotor disk resurfaced). Finlay Unit#d Mot#rs accepted the fault and they replaced a new brake pad set at free of cost. Problem solved. I had all proof to convince them. I always keep description label/tag(shows product code and batch number) of the newly installed part as well as invoices with me.

Check this matter with some other Monterosport (A/T) owners as well.

not sure why a senior manager would drive a MS instead of a nice comfortable city car or CUV. I own one cause I have to visit sites that dont have proper access roads and so far it has being getting me there in style. :)

the handbrake lever of MS needs to bepushed completely to disengage otherwise vehicle will keep moving while handbrakes partially engaged. This has happened to me few times on first month of owning the vehicle. handbrake indicator lamp is sometimes covered by the steering wheel and as MS has a high pulling power you wont easily notice that handbrake is not completely disengaged.
