Ae91 Trueno Engine Swap

Ricer

Question

I'm thinking of swapping my Toyota Trueno's 5A-F carb engine for an engine with more HP. She is my daily so I want her to be reliable as well. Please suggest me a good engine along with their pros and cons.

I need the engine

1. To be from Toyota

2. To fit into the existing mounts, without any fabrication of the firewall

3. To have E.F.I.

4. To be available in SL with their gearbox, wire harness and E.C.U., for a reasonable price

5. Not to screw-up the weight distribution of the car

Currently considering 4age (black-top, silver-top), 4agze (heard it's a bit rare), 4efte, 3sge, 3sgte (not sure whether these will fit an FWD)

Thanks in advance

Blacktop is the way to go, plenty around in SL with ECU, gearbox harness and all. It's a well understood engine with plenty of info online (The others are too of course). And as iRage said, it's authentic to the Trueno since there was a variant that had a 4AGE (Though that was a silvertop, might as well go blacktop for the added power) so the conversion will be straightforward.

Blacktop 4age 20v would be your easiest pick, 3SGTE would be nice but it won't be easy. too much work, there's an ongoing project for AA60 coupe with a 3SGTE, he told me so :). when you are buying a BT 4AGE please be cautious on the mileage. there are plenty of engines out there was removed from Carina /Corolla GT's and Levin's due to defects. you can drop a text to Muditha here if you having trouble finding one, he will help you. and it's an awesome piece of Engine good luck, let us know the progress.

Yes the black-top wold be the easy option as ae92s came with 4ages. But I also visited a garage to get an opinion on the matter and he recommended a 4efte with a modified block (to make it 1.5). He said that it would fit the existing mounts as well. So what would be the better option? 4age or 4efte?

Also thought about 3sge and 3sgte but as you all have mentioned it's not a straight forward swap.

There is also 4agzes but aren't they a bit rare in SL? The ae92s also came with the supercharged version.

My goal, at the end of the day is to make more power while not compromising the reliability and handling of the car.

Asked the price of the blacktop which was advertised on R@pidR3vR@cing. He wants 350k for it. Is this the normal price for one?

I would go with a 4age. Yes the ae92 came with a 16v 4age or 4agze depending on the grade/trim. You shoulhave no ttouble dropping inthe 4age. The 4age vis rev happy and the 4efte would be more torquey. My advice stick with a single engine instead of these mixing and matching. Trust me. I am having a pain in the @$$ trying to get things done for my 7age. Mechanics, including the famous shops that do race tuning, hit blank walls not knowing what is going on or trying to find parts.

4EFTE is 1.3 turbo inter-cooler, 4AGE N/A but still a power house. 4EFTE produce 133 hp (99 kW) at 6,400 rpm and 4AGE produce 165 PS (121 kW) at 7,800 rpm. but i'm not not sure about the trannies though if you can use c56 that would be awesome for 4agae :). And ECU! 4age M/T ECU is hard to find so better to grab one if you have the chance, one of my friend had to import one from Japan. can we see your ride machan, would love to see her :)

What about the guy who did the conversion? By the way, was it your Trueno I saw parked opposite T0k1m0 about a week ago?

Yup he's the one. I had a chat with Muditha and he recommended a place. I should have a search around Wijerama area.

BTW, don't you only need stuff like the pistons and rings for an engine overhaul? ( I'm not that familiar with the process)

mine was not an overhaul, recommendation was to replace the Engine. as I'm bit Panidthaya took the long journey and ended up replacing each and very part completely. to be frank it was bit messed too. long story in short

Searched around Wijerama today and called the place Muditha got his engine from. Still no luck :sad-smiley-066::sad-smiley-066: Anybody know of a place that might have the blacktop with the 6 speed gearbox, E.C.U. and wire harness?

@Ricer adee that looks good noh :o any images inside as well plus engine bay. Be patient i had to be too, IF you have anyone around Kurunagala too give them a shout. i'll have a call with the guys who had mine and let you know on Monday :)

Yeah bro they said that they only have the gearbox.

She might look good on photos but the paint job is not perfect and there are some rust spots as well. The all important Trueno badges are missing and I think the front bumper and the lights are not original.

Yeah they may not be - i was toying with the idea of picking this up myself some months ago and when i looked at it on Park Road the turn indicators/parking lights on one side were damaged

It's a nice looking car that :)

I wasn't too hot on the carburetted engine myself so wanted take the same road you seem to be taking now...

Did you check with places like US Car Sale on Hill Street in Dehiwala or Euro Nippon in Wadduwa - they may have 4AGE black or silver tops around....

Yes the lights are damaged. This was first advertised on 1km@n and later it was advertised on AL, bought it after seeing it on AL. Went to see her the very day it was advertised on AL and bought her 2 days later.

I think this is how the front should look

Corolla_Trueno_Kouki_coupeacute_zpsbvvsd

The 5A-F carb engine is not that bad though. Managed to do 160 on the highway, with AC on and carrying 3 more passengers.

Mate did u do enough inspection of the car suspension, brakes etc... before you thought of doing this 160kmph run on the highway??

Yes bro... The brakes are fine. Pads and the disk were in good shape. BTW I didn't maintain 160, wanted to see what she's capable of. Got back to 100 after that ;)
