Hi guys

Apart from my passion for cars, my other passion since I was a kid has been photography. Lately I have gone professional with this passion and get called out to cover various events.

I need a good lap top that can help me with my work as I mostly shoot digital (eventhough digital still can not match film).

This is what I need......

(1)good storage capacity - most pics are between 4Mb and 10 MB in size each.

(2) fast processor - for quick loads and digi shop work.

(3) anything else you may suggest.

My knowledge on computers is not that great. So please help me out here guys. What kind of a lap top will be suitable for my work? I am not all that interested in brand names. What I need is the specs I should look for.

Thanks in advance.

if you do a lot of editing, i hear apple is the way to go for graphics uses. but i'm no expert on apples

what i can suggest is for you to get the new centrino duo processor (dual core for notebooks) and plenty of ram.

You may want to think on the lines of the think pad (IBM/Lenovo) damn rugged machine which will come handy when your out on your bush trips.. It's got good strong hinges as well- made of steel so you wont have get the creeks cheaper laps like Acer might give you.. I just saw the new add- it comes with a titanium inner shell for greater protection.

Downside is the price.. hope this helps..

I am with Pilla Duncan, when it comes to Laptops IBM's are a bit like Toyota Hilux's, they are rugged, reliables, no frills, but plenty of thrills, some of the best equiped and best made laptops i have ever come accross,

a bit on the expensive side, check out the T Series, and possibly T43P though I think there is a new model out now,

Regards,

The Don

Duncan if ur requirements are just for photo editing there's no use in goin for hi-spec laptops like Apple Powerbooks...not really sure how the newer IBM's are but they've been recommended so they shud b gud...one thing tho...however temptin these slim laptops look dont touch em even if they dont see the outside of ur bedroom...they'r way too fragile IMO (eg Sony Vaio)...

But...if ur lookin to edit video in the near future u'll need a very hi-spec machine so beware...

Oh and btw dont make the mistake of NOT backin up ur best bits onto DVD's...ive learnt from that mistake...gravely

duncan, another option you can look at is called MoDT. That is mobile on desktop. These are desktops running on mobile processors. the good thing is that these are really compact...not your avg desktop size. it's probably little bigger than a "man purse"

this will also be cheaper...

go 4 DELL …. Trust me….. no hardware conflicts ….daaam good lap top machines...

I agree. Dell runs crazy promotions too. If you keep watching u can get a great deal. Mostly in US though. I dont know whether they do same in international markets. Adding up RAM etc. cost very little with Dell.

DELL is not that aggressive inSL.. they don't have those value add promos that they run elsewhere...

i met a guy who headed the dell sales team for asia and he was telling me that the bare PC barely make a profit. its in those value add upgrades that they make their profit...

buy it from sing with international warranty, then you can claim warranty here as well.. agian i stress. once you buy the notebook, tell the vendor you will check if int. warranty is there or you will return it. normally they have to register the notebook for int. warranty. or it wnt be covered.

DELL has lap tops starting from LKR 85,000/=upwords, if u can give me the configuration u want I can tell u the exact price...

PS: At the moment DELL is the best selling brand in the travel trade in SL , specially there's a huge demand for laptops from travel agents now.

true… even I want a big screen 17":D Plus I am gonna get a extra normal keyboard and mouse.. Not a fan of laptop keyboards and touh pads... And I heard it’s gonna cost me like hell if either needs a repair…plus normal KB and mouse give more freedome…

and yes Fuzzo, will ask them abt the warenty as well when buying!!!

and my budget is about 140k (loan plus 20-30k)... so should be able to find a good one for that range

DELL desktop PC's are not good in UK, but never heard of any pro's abt laptops yet.. I would recomend Toshiba, one of my frnds is using a P4(toshiba) for over 3 years now, no problems at all. and the speaker system is amazing for a laptop.(harman Kardon)

I used a Toshiba (Centrino) for 1 year.. very good machine.
